Daily Independent (Ashland, KY) - Boyd explores employee drug testing

Boyd County may quick join the growing list of Kentucky counties to pass preceptive drug testing for all employees.

The Boyd County Fiscal Court plans to discuss implementing a countywide drug-testing policy among its department heads to gather their input before allowing for a policy.

The stroke of has a limited drug-testing wisdom on the books even now, but officials seem to be confused about who is covered under it and whether it has been enforced newly.

Mike Rogers, county road department supervisor, said his department has randomly tested employees with commercial driver’s licenses for years.

Some commissioners said they are in favor of expanding the policy to the whole of employees, especially those who operate county-owned vehicles.

“It’s a good archetype if you want to end it,” said commissioner Carl Tolliver.

“It needs to be a standard policy that fits every part of of us,” said Sheriff Terry Keelin. “Department heads need to meet to go over it and come to a address that addresses what we need to address.”

Jailer Joe Burchett said he too supports a comprehensive policy and said the facility used to send employees for random testing.

Keelin said his department does not have a policy but is in need of one.

County officials did not set a date for discussing any proposed policy. The court’s next meeting is Dec. 2.
